Abstract Oxygen uptake from air and from water was measured during routine activity at 2TC in two faculta~iveair-breathing teleosts, iioplrrytl~rinus14 niraenintus and Etyrhrinlrs ~pt1trinsr.v.These fish brearhe air in hypuxic water. lsking a breath every I to 2 min. Gill ventilation increases in hypoxic water if air breathing is prevenred. but decreases if air breathing is permitted.
