| Abstract | In August 1988 Coxiella burnetii was identified in the lungs of a 2-day-old dead kitten from Prince Edward Island by a direct fluorescent antibody test. The kitten was from a stray cat that had aborted fetuses about 10 days earlier. Examination showed no gross lesions, but multifocal, granulomatous myocarditis, hepatitis, nephritis and a diffuse granulomatous pneumonia were seen microscopically. Three weeks later, 4 apparently healthy 3-week-old kittens from an unrelated cat were submitted for euthanasia following a diagnosis of coxiellosis in the cat's owner. Antibodies to C. burnetii phase II antigen were detected in serum from the kittens.. |
