Abstract Severe upper cervical spinal cord compression in a 3-year-old spayed Shih Tzu bitch was caused by a dorsally angulated dens. Neurological signs included quadriparesis, severe truncal flexion, ataxia and proprioceptive deficits. Myelography demonstrated spinal cord compression which was relieved by odontoidectomy and atlantoaxial fusion..
