| Abstract | Uterine biopsies were taken on days 0, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20 and 30 of the study from control mares and mares given intrauterine infusions of saline (group 2) or 1% povidone-iodine (group 3) on days 0 and 2. Control mares demonstrated mild inflammatory cellular reaction following biopsy. In group 2 mares the concn of inflammatory cells in the endometria was parallel to that of controls, but at a slightly higher level. Biopsies from group 3 mares exhibited an acute inflammatory reaction characterized by neutrophilia until days 7-10, followed by a chronic reaction with a predominance of mononuclear cells, including macrophages, plasma cells and mast cells. The chronic inflammation in povidone-iodine-treated mares persisted until day 30 and it was suggested that this could possibly compromise the future fertility of the mares.. |
