| Abstract | In 2 herds, yearling dairy heifers were given 2 or 4 intraruminal pellets containing elemental selenium 3 g or were not treated. During 7 months after treatment mean whole-blood glutathione peroxidase activity was higher in treated than in untreated heifers and, in one herd, which had the lowest initial values, was higher in those given 4 than in those given 2 pellets. In that herd also, but not in the other, liveweight gain was 10% higher than in the untreated heifers; 4 pellets had no greater effect than 2. Pregnancy rate and mating-start to conception interval were not significantly affected by Se treatment.. |
