Maureen Wichtel

Biography

Title: Assistant Professor (Large Animal Medicine)

Education: DVM; PhD; Dipl. ACVIM.

Dr. Wichtel is currently an assistant professor in large animal medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island. She received her veterinary degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1985, did an internship at Iowa State University and a residency at North Carolina State University. She received board certification in Large Animal Medicine in 1994. In 1991, Dr Wichtel took up a position as an assistant lecturer in veterinary anesthesia at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. During her stay in NZ, Dr Wichtel also taught medicine to fourth and final year veterinary students, acted as a consultant to local equine veterinary practitioners, and enrolled in a PhD program. She received her PhD soon afer moving to Canada. Dr Wichtel’s areas of interest include neonatology, gastrointestinal physiology, acid/base and electrolyte disorders, and equine respiratory disease. Dr Wichtel lives in Kingston, PEI with her husband (who is also a veterinarian) and two daughters.
