| Abstract | Ring-opening metathesis polymn. of organoiron norbornene monomers functionalized with azobenzene chromophores using the Grubbs catalyst was carried out to prep. the corresponding cationic organoiron polynorbornenes. The chiral monomers were prepd. by coupling reactions of complexes and 5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid. UV-vis spectra of the organometallic polymers in DMF showed maxima at 420-430 nm, and upon acidification, a bathochromic shift to 510-520 nm was obsd. Cyclic voltammetry studies showed that the iron centers underwent reversible redn. steps between -1.2 and -1.4 V. Thermogravimetric anal. of the organoiron polymers showed two wt. loss steps from 225 to 255° and from 400 to 510°. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the cationic organoiron polynorbornenes had glass transition temp. (Tg) of 145-178°, while the Tg of the org. analogs occurred at 99-104°.
