| Abstract | 120 broiler-type [male][male] were kept under a regime of 23-h light:1-h darkness (23L:1D) at 54 lux from 1 day to 5 wk of age, when they were divided into 6 groups subjected to 12L:12D or 16L:8D at 5.4, 10.8 or 54 lux. Semen production and the fertility of semen diluted 1:3 in Lake's diluent were studied between 25 and 51 wk of age. Lighting significantly affected the percentage of [male][male] producing semen (from 49.6+or-3.0 for 12L:12D at 10.8 lux to 68.7+or-2.7 for 16L:8D at 10.8 lux), ejaculate volume (from 0.16+or-0.01 ml for 12L:12D at 10.8 lux to 0.21+or-0.02 ml for 16L:8D at 10.8 lux), and fertility of eggs set (from 63.4+or-1.7% for 16L:8D at 5.4 lux to 74.1+or-1.42 for 12L:12D at 10.8 lux). Sperm concentration was not significantly affected by light regime.. |
