Ray Doiron

Dr. Doiron is Professor in the Faculty of Education, and was the first Director at the Centre for Education Research (2007–2010). He received his PhD from the Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction in the Department of Language and Literacy at University of British Columbia. He has been a primary teacher and administrator as well as serving six years as a teacher-librarian in the largest elementary school in Prince Edward Island.

Since joining the Faculty of Education at UPEI in 1995, Ray has taught courses in early literacy, curriculum integration, children’s literature, communications, and various areas of school librarianship. He has worked extensively with pre-service teachers in their practicum experience and has collaborated with other Faculty members and students to develop innovative approaches to practicum programs. He has also worked closely with the literacy community in PEI, holding leadership roles with the PEI Literacy Alliance and providing support for government and community literacy initiatives. His research centers on students’ reading interests and motivating student reading particularly exploring issues of gender and reading, influences of technology on reading, and how the school library can play a significant role in the development of literacy and lifelong learning. He has a passion for exploring who the new learners are, how they require new approaches for learning and how school libraries continue to provide a stimulating, inquiry-based environment for teaching and learning.
