|Abstract||The versatility of cationic cyclopentadienyliron complexes is demonstrated for the generation of calixarene-based dendrimers and polymers. Dendrimers were prepd. from a branched organoiron calixarene through subsequent reactions of azo dyes and organoiron complexes. The resulting azo dye-contg. metallocalixarenes were sol. in polar org. solvents and displayed Î»max ranging between 430 and 456 nm. Upon addn. of various acids, the Î»max shifted to higher wavelengths (513-535 nm). In the solid state and in soln., the azo dye-contg. metallocalixarenes reversibly changed color in the presence of acid and base, indicating their potential use as acid sensors. Cyclic voltammetric studies showed that the iron centers of the metallocalixarenes were reversibly reduced at E1/2 = -1.49 V. When non-branching organoiron-based calixarene were reacted with dithiols, polymers contg. calixarenes either in their side chains or main chains were obtained. The polymers possessed wt. av. mol. wts. between 35 000 and 53 000. The polymers were detd. to be thermally stable with backbone decompn. occurring above 500 Â°C. [on SciFinder(R)]|
