Basil Favaro is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education with responsibility in the B.Ed. degree program for Social Studies Methods in the Early, Middle and Senior Years; team teaching, co-coordination and practicum supervision in the Specialization in Indigenous Education, coordination of the Year 11 Practicum Seminar program, Enterprise Education K-12, and Entrepreneurial Education in the M.Ed. Program in Leadership and Learning. He also takes leadership for the coordination of the annual Opening Program in Education, the Education Open House, the Maritime Education Job Fair and the Education student engagement process launched this past year.
Basil completed his PhD in Secondary Education from the University of Alberta in 1982. His doctoral thesis under the supervision of Dr. Ted Aoki focused on Re-searching the Meaning of Consulting in Continuing Teacher Education. His teaching career has spanned 37 years including 4 years in high school with the Cape Breton County School Board (1969-73), 11 years in in-service education as Coordinator of Continuing Teacher Education at the University College of Cape Breton (1974-85), 21 years in pre-service education at Mount Allison University (1985-97) and UPEI since 1997.
His research and scholarly activity extended into research co-ordinator for Nurturing an Enterprise Culture in New Brunswick, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, 1992-97; principal author and co-developer of the teacher resource Pathways to Enterprise for Grades 3-8, Atlantic Provinces Education, 1994-97, and co-author of Entrepreneurship and the Cultural Industries for the Nova Scotia senior high Fine Arts course option. He served as principal workshop facilitator for the implementation of Pathways to Enterprise throughout the Atlantic region for the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation 1997-99. His leadership in program evaluation included external evaluator of the Kent County Native Education Project in New Brunswick (1986-91) and evaluation coordinator of the Elsipogtog Big Cove First Nation School Evaluation Project (1992-94). He currently serves as external reviewer with Thomson Nelson Canada Ltd for the new Elementary Social Studies curriculum for Atlantic Canada.
Basil has led 19 funded study tours to Europe with Canadian pre-service and in-service teachers in Elementary and Secondary Education (1977-79, 89-97), Promoting Enterprise Education in Teacher Education (1997-2000) HRDC $298,000, and Advancing Inclusionary Practices in Post-secondary Education (2000-2004) HRDC $298,000. These exchange programs investigated best practices at both the school and post-secondary levels in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Atlantic Canada. Basil is currently the UPEI co-ordinator of a new seven-partner research and development project funded by HRSDC ($200,000) in Advocacy and Leadership: Enhancing Educational and Employment Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (2007-10).
