| Abstract | Discusses tourism as an extension of the commodification of modern social life under capitalism. Commodifcation is viewed as an all-pervasive characteristic of modern capitalism, involving commodity production & exchange, the mass manipulation of commodity sign, & the standardization of products, tastes, & experiences. Such processes have important consequences for the reification of consciousness, & hence for the smooth reproduction & expansion of contemporary capitalism. Tourism as a complex sociocultural dimension of modernity is subject to the same general principles of capitalist consumer culture. 65 References. Adapted from the source document. |
