| Abstract | Cationic quaternary ammonium compounds such as Zephiran have been used for years to treat fish diseases, especially bacterial gill disease, in spite of the sometimes high mortality associated wit treatment. Rainbow trout exposed to Zephiran concentrations of 1-40 ppm developed, at all concentrations, changes in the gills, seen as spongiotic and necrotic, with lamellar fusion, membrane vesiculation, hydropic degeneration and exfoliation of epithelium. Blood changes indicated that the fish became hypoxic, with loss of sodium and chloride to the surrounding water. It is concluded that Zephiran is too toxic for treatment of fish.. |
